My Texas Tall Tale

My week on Secret Service detail

About Me

Short version: Married essayist. Empty nester. Dog rescuer. Avid Jazzercizer. Neatnik. Reader. I will help any turtle cross the road.

Longer, with details: When I was 11, I was shocked to hear I'd won first place in a Texas Tall Tales contest. Not only that, but my story was published in the local paper. (I wrote about how braces were made from metal I found in a treasure chest off the coast of Padre Island.)

Writing came naturally and I took notes on everything and everyone ("this will make a great letter") and wrote to friends, family, basically anyone I knew who could read.

After college I had my own weekly column at The Houston Post, where my favorite assignment was shadowing a Secret Service agent for a week. (They tried to recruit me because they needed more women. I declined.)

Now I'm an empty nester returning to my first love—writing.

"This will make a great letter" turned (hopefully) into "this will make a great essay."
